A couple of years ago I was on stage at the Comic Strip Live on the Upper East Side, dusting off the same tired old set I’d been performing for years. It was my first time being back on a comedy club stage after a long pandemic hiatus. My writing partner was off stage watching the set when something popped in his brain. I was halfway through my bit about people telling me “You’re Not A Real New Yorker until…” when he thought, “That would make a great series of cartoons for Daily Shouts on the New Yorker!”
An hour after I got off stage we had 100 written. The next day, 250. A year later we registered the trademark on the concept and signed a 4-book deal to publish You’re Not a Real Parent Until…, then Dog-Owner Until, then Golfer Until, and then New Yorker Until…
The New Yorker published an exclusive excerpt of the first book last week. Below is another cheeky sneak peek of the book before it drops this week. You can grab a copy for your favorite parent here. (Just in time for Father’s Day! *wink*)
I drew this cartoon after my daughter was born, but before I learned magic. Now that I’ve learned some magic, I no longer have a daughter.
Unrelatedly, if anyone knows how to make something reappear, please contact me immediately.
(You can read a NYer comic I wrote about teaching my daughter magic here)
I drew this cartoon as a present for friends of mine who are married with kids. Jaclyn and Joey! Your pain is famous!!
This is an old New Yorker cartoon. I’m not a parent, but I’ve sure interacted with them (read: snooped through their drawers). Congratulations Jason on the book!
In elementary school, my class read The Boxcar Children, and I drew a picture of the four siblings. When I brought it home, my mom thought it was a picture of our family and immediately framed it and hung it up. For YEARS I didn’t have the heart to tell my parents it was actually a picture of four fictional orphans. Eventually I told them and now it’s just a funny picture they keep hanging up.
Also, what the heck kind of book premise is The Boxcar Children?
Parents love video chatting like this.
And Jason, I can’t wait for your book to become a bestseller and then when I tell people I’m a cartoonist named Jason they mistake me for you and get super star-struck.

I loved the Boxcar Children when I was a kid!
I so look forward to your columns! My fav was your story about “Dangerfield’s”. I just couldn’t stop reading it! Magnificent story and sad ending to a once hoppin’ joint. I was born in the Comedy Borscht Belt of the Catskills and remember so many famous comedians coming there in the mid to late ‘60’s. It was a great time!
The book I’m most excited about though is, “You’re Not a Real New Yorker Until...” I’m a 10th generation New Yorker (they settled New Amsterdam in the 1600’s!) and that will go to a majority of my family.
Keep up the great work! It highlights my week.
Your new fan, Louise
