Ah, myths. They're all around us. Passed down from ancient peoples and the older kids on the playground. Here are some of our favorite myth toons to pair with Dead-Guy-Isn't-Really-Dead Day and any colored eggs you have laying about.

I've always had a tendency to put things up on pedestals, to mythologize certain people, places, songs, ice cream flavors (Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookie Dough specifically)... When you are non-religious, maybe it's natural to end up turning things from your secular life into quasi-religious idols. But be careful putting things up on pedestals - they can topple, bury you, and then you have to eat your way out.

They say the more you microwave your coffee, the closer you are to hell. But hell is, of course, subjective. Who would you expect to find in your cup?

"O, Sirens!" anagram, "Seniors!"

Artists tend to engage in self-mythologizing. I personally try to keep that kind of thing to a minimum. Ten-thousand-years-old, sealed away in a labyrinth during most of my teens, that sort of thing. Sometimes I tell publishers that Zeus, disguised as a swan, seduced by my mother who then gave birth to me, a demi-god, who was subsequently cast out from the heavens and forced to walk among mere mortals, but that's only if I'm trying to sell a book. Generally, I keep my bio simple and as close to the truth as possible.

I always wanted to believe the stories I read in the bible when I was a kid. I went to an Anglican school. I was the kid in class putting his hand up to ask questions that had the Bible Studies teacher uhm-ing and ah-ing before changing the subject. I wasn't exactly a miniature Christopher Hitchens, but I knew something was amiss. There were either pages that had been torn out of the book, or someone took an early lunch when they wrote Genesis. The Bible is a collection of books written by different people over many centuries, so it would be expected to contain contradictions. But would it have killed them to hire a copy editor? Anyway. Here's Moses, doing his thing in a cartoon I sold to MAD Magazine. (PS. Remember Buzzfeed?)

Obviously, some portion of the unicorn population is hardcore gamers. That's just how statistics work.

I've just subscribed to ToonStack and am enjoying a mix of cartoons from familiar and new-to-me cartoonists. I love how Substack is turning into what twitter used to be for cartoonists: a way to chat, share and discover stuff, and be slightly snarky without descending into bat shit crazy abuse.
