Artist often have favorite subjects: Cézanne had his apples, Degas his dancers, Georgia O’Keefe her…er…flowers. Freed from the need to find new subjects, these familiar images allow artists to experiment and explore. There is meaning, dear reader, in repetition.
For me, it’s animals in bed. Through the wide eyes of some beloved creature, I get to explore that most fundamental element of human relations: sex. The Roman playwright, Terrence, once said, “I am a man, I consider nothing that is human alien to me.” To that, dear reader, I add: “In bed…with a whale.”
These familiar subjects also give us a glimpse into the inner-workings of these creative minds.

It’s important to discuss your needs and wants with your sexual partner, be they about the various trappings of traditional institutions of coupledom, or the kinky decapitation rituals of your particular persuasion. We are all entitled to voice our preferences sans judgment, no matter if our needs erase the identities — lexical or cephalic — of our fellow copulators. Lovers, go forth and consume each other!
This is a cartoon that will probably get me in trouble!!!! A friend recently said to me, “The First 50 Shades of Grey is a literal masterpiece” and you know what… I do not disagree!!!!
You can only sell cartoons about animal sex habits if a high enough percentage of the population also knows about these sex habits. Otherwise your cartoon is what we call “niche,” which is a nice word for “not sold.”
