In 2016, when we were all filled with so much rage and didn’t know what to do, Francoise Mouly (The New Yorker) asked us to send her artwork for the first issue of Resist! I sent this piece, and it was included in the publication. No Emotional Taxation Without Representation. A saying I had been chanting to myself in my bedroom, then in marches from New York to Park City, UT where I was for the Slamdance Film Festival. I made this sign, and I still have it. It’s been sitting in my office, on a book shelf, as a reminder, of a time I foolishly thought I would not be returning to. Alas myself, along with so many other silly hopefuls, were proven not only wrong, but horribly wrong. Again, I’m sitting here bottled with rage before Thanksgiving. Again, having no idea how I’m going to handle seeing certain people in my life. Playing out fights in my head that I know will never actually happen. No idea where to put my feelings other than in my sketchbook. Riot. Rage. Reproductive Rights, hanging by a thread. It’s funny because looking at this cartoon in some ways makes me cringe, I think I am a much better cartoonist now, I had an inkling of a feeling to redraw it, but then I thought no. It was good enough then, it’s good enough now, and the feeling is still there. And so is my sign. I’ll be picking it up for more marches, I’m sure.
I asked the cartoonists this week to share their cartoons on all types of riots, and here’s what they sent me.

I’m too nice. I feel like I’ve been trained to be nice —always, everywhere, at all times with all people. Even people who are terrible (don’t stoop to their level).
Is it an American thing? Generally, yes. A Democratic thing? Maybe. But I don’t want to start a riot. Nevertheless, I would love to have this book, study this book, and take private lessons from the author.
There's nothing like the good, old-fashioned free market to put a fire under your... fin.

We all experience rage, sometimes daily, sometimes occasionally, sometimes forever.
I felt it late at night on November 5th. I still do, therefore, I will avoid driving for a while, probably the next four years.
But wait, there’s more!

It's great to see cartoonists, generally a lefty lot, finding funny in the election aftermath. Good on you! I don't know why exactly, but the right is practically humourless. I'd love to see you folx prove me wrong.
